Wednesday marked the first time in 2010 that the average price for a gallon of gas was cheaper than it was in 2009, according to AAA Carolinas. The average price for a gallon of gas was $2.61 statewide Wednesday compared to $2.62 a year ago. In Gaston County, motorists could find gas Wednesday for as low as $2.48 a gallon. That’s about 25 cents less per gallon than four weeks ago.What happens with gas prices this summer depends on whether hurricanes strike, demand changes and the financial crisis in Europe is resolved, said Tom Crosby, AAA Carolinas vice president of communications.
Demand for gasoline and diesel fuel is improving, but the price is still hovering around the $2.70 per gallon mark nationwide that’s expected for summer, said Mary Welge, an editor of Oil Price Information. She didn’t anticipate prices reaching $3 a gallon.
After several weeks of declining crude oil prices, those prices started rising this week.
In separate incidents Wednesday night, pairs of gunmen robbed convenience stores and got away.
